AutoSave for Windows Desktop Word, Excel, and PowerPoint was introduced in 2017 and is currently available for Office365 subscribers. (Excel Online, Excel for Android, Excel for iOS, and Excel Mobile in the Windows Store do support this feature, though.)
Nah.. I love being in full control of the file I am editing. The file I am working on should only be saved if I give the command to do so. I turned off this kind of autosave thing on PhpStorm and Android Studio.
Autosave negatively affects large swathes of use cases in Excel. Search for Autosave on the Microsoft user forum to see hundreds of posts by users whose ability to get work done has been crippled, thousands of hours of lost productivity. If you want the feature, excellent! You should have the ability to use it. But Microsoft should also allow the ability to turn this feature off as a default at an Excel level, not a file-by-file level, just like we can do with Auto Recover.
And where was the help and support to guide me through this new BS that you now have as standard?! I prefer saving locally only, and now you have killed the old autosave that gave me peace of mind. Unbelievable stupidity.
The good news is that Word for Mac has a built-in autosave feature called AutoRecover. This means that Word is quietly saving the document you are working on without you needing to manually tell the software to do so.
My file system structure turned out to be a little different than that suggested in Bryan P's excellent answer (no Microsoft in Application Support), and I couldn't search for file name since search doesn't work for hidden files. Luckily, there is a tool called Find Any File.

Recently updated to Mojave 10.14.5 and ever since the autosave function in MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint is greyed out (Office version 16.25 19051201). Prior to the update, all files opened from OneDrive locally automatically had the autosave function. Now only files opened from the web (or online) version of OneDrive have the autosave function. I have reinstalled OneDrive app, and all Office programs. I would hazard a guess that prior to the OS update, opening a file from my local oneDrive folder actually opened the online version hence the appearance of the autosave function. For some reason after the OS update, that link has been lost so that only the local file opens without autosave. I would like the autosave back. Has anyone else seen this recently and worked out a fix?
Autosave only works when you open the file through your online OneDrive and not through the local OneDrive file saved to your Mac. If opening a local Mac OneDrive file you need to save the file periodically as we all did before OneDrive came on the scene. It will automatically update to the online OneDrive after each manual save and reflect the file history. Not a big drama as you can always open and work on the online file (or choose you local file) through File>open. As to why autosave appeared for the local Office 365 OneDrive files and then disappeared after the Mojave update, I have no idea and it appears no one else does. Autosave does work on my Window PCs - any file opened comes up with autosave on. Probably the files seen on the PC are actually the online OneDrive files rather than locally saved files. Minor irritation because opening files from the local OneDrive folder with autosave on (so you had a choice whether to use autosave or not) was good but I guess it is not the end of the world.
Thank you for your advise as above. This process has worked for me since I started using some of the ms programmes word /and excel. However, I can only get word to be saved, excel will not and is causing me problems.
So, I just had to hard crash excel after the rainbow wheel spun for 30 Minutes. After 2 hours of work I finally completed one of those long, hard, repetitive, tedious series of tasks to fix/transform some data.
Subscribers to Microsoft Office 365 may have noticed a new button on their documents since August 2017 or so. In the upper left-hand corner there is now an AutoSave slide button. If it is grayed out, it is because your document does not reside on OneDrive or a SharePoint server. Move and store your document on OneDrive and the AutoSave button will become active automatically.
But you can also see these autosaved versions until you have saved the file. Once the current version of the file has been saved, all the previous autosaved files will disappear. To save them, you need to take the backup of the file.

Files On-Demand has been available on Windows since 2017, and on macOS since 2018. In that time, we've progressed from the feature being opt-in only to being on by default for all users and have closely monitored how many users turn off Files On-Demand. Only a very small number of users disable Files On-Demand on both platforms, and there are two main reasons for that.
The MATLAB Editor autosave feature was introduced in MATLAB 6.5 (Release 13). This feature automatically maintains backup files that preserve your M-file changes if MATLAB terminates unexpectedly, for example, due to a power failure. You can set autosave preferences that make it easy to remove the saved files when they are no longer needed.
Using Autosave Files Can Save You Time After making changes to a file in the Editor/Debugger, if five minutes elapse and you have not saved your changes, the Editor/Debugger automatically saves a copy of the file for you. By default, the backup file is stored in the same location and with the same name as the original file, but has an .asv (for autosave) extension. For UNIX platforms, the default extension is appended with the tilde () character, making the autosave file filename.m.
Removing Unnecessary Autosave Files the Easy Way While autosave files can help you recover from a disaster, they also can be a maintenance nuisance. Whenever you move a file to another directory, rename a file, or even delete a file, the original autosave version remains. You are left with a scattered collection of autosave files you will never need. One way to avoid this problem is to store all autosave files in a single directory that you specify. Then, on a regular basis, you can remove all autosave files at once by deleting the contents of that directory. Chances are that if you have not used an autosave version during a session, you will not need it later.
You use preferences to specify an autosave directory for all autosave files. To do so, follow these four steps. Step 1: Select File -> Preferences -> Editor/Debugger -> Autosave. Step 2: Under Location, select Single Directory and then browse to or supply the name of the directory where all autosave files will be stored. Click OK.
Step 3: When you no longer need the autosave files, select all the files in the autosave files directory and delete them. Step 4: To make the autosave file deletion process even easier, you can include a line in your finish.m file to clean out the autosave directory every time you quit MATLAB. A finish.m file is a script you create to run specified functions when MATLAB shuts down. 2ff7e9595c
